We all start the New Year with the best of intentions – but the very latest shopping trends show that ‘dry January’ actually only lasts for two weeks at most
Over indulgence over the Christmas and New Year period usually signals a January detox where we all promise ourselves to stay off the booze and eat more fruit and veg. This coincides with a dusting off of the gym membership along with a vow to shed those festive pounds.
However, even the best of intentions come unstuck at times and this is exactly what the latest shopping trends provided by mobile couponing specialists Shopitize (www.shopitize.com) illustrate.
Dry January might as well be called Chocolate January

The latest trends show that ‘dry January’ lasts for approximately 14 days, and then New Year’s resolutions are somewhat forgotten and that bottle of wine, six pack of beer or both sneakily make their way back into the UK’s shopping baskets.
How does Shopitize know this?
As Shopitize’s mobile couponing app goes viral, more and more smart shoppers are signing up each day to save money on their favourite brands with this ultimate grocery companion.
Every time shoppers use the Shopitize app, they have to snap their paper receipt showing they have bought the featured product, and the digital version is then automatically uploaded into Shopitize’s ecosystem for validation. They can then claim cashback by PayPal or cheque.
As a result Shopitize can build up a picture of the shopping habits of all its users and gain a great insight into the UK’s shopping behaviour.
“BOGOF is so 2012,” observes Irina Pafomova, Shopitize’s managing director. “The insights coming out of the Shopitize mobile couponing service are unique and give a good illustration of the UK’s shopping habits. For example, the thousands of savvy shoppers who use the app have shown us that alcohol really only stays out the shopping basket for around two weeks in January and then the New Year’s resolutions are broken and life gets back to normal.”

Of course it could be that folk just bought too much booze before Christmas & New Year, then it took another two weeks to get through it!
Pint anyone? Hic!
I agree with David, because I buy it doesn’t mean I consume it..though it can give that impression. Though in our house we still serve drinks to guests even when we are on the wagon for January.
Iain…
Thanks.
An interesting comment which opens up another discussion, another direction
