Projection : Pinterest to be responsible for 40% of social media e-commerce transactions

Pinterest could be the most valuable social network for businesses that retail online, venturebeat.com reports.

The photo-sharing site, which has seen its popularity soar in recent months, has quickly established itself as a formidable e-commerce site too; with clicks on the site more likely to lead to purchases or transactions.

On a first touch revenue per click basis, Pinterest beat Facebook by 27 per cent and Twitter by 400 per cent. This, it is thought, is because Pinterest introduces consumers to brands they may not have heard of much better than its closest competitors.

Now, businesses using social media marketing are being urged to add a ‘Pinit’ button to their products – alongside the ‘Like’ and ‘Tweet’ buttons – in order to drive in new customers who may have otherwise been unaware of the product or brand.

Speaking to econsultancy.com, marketing expert Jeff Zwelling explained: “In Q2 2011, Pinterest.com represented 1.2 per cent of social media revenue for e-commerce sites.

“It now represents 17.4 per cent and is quickly gaining on Facebook. We project Pinterest will be responsible for 40 per cent of social media e-commerce transactions by end of Q2 2012 reducing Facebook’s share to slightly under 60 per cent from 86 per cent a year ago.”
