Proprietary software solutions are facing a long-term decline as developers and IT executives look towards open source solutions, according to a new survey by Acquia and .net magazine.
The survey, which quizzed nearly 3000 developers from all over the world on a wide range of web design and development trends, revealed that 83% of respondents preferred using open source instead of traditional proprietary software.
The survey results indicate that open source adoption is continuing to increase due to web developers’ preference for using tools that have a strong online community, readily available add-ons and are cost effective and easy to use.
The survey provides unique insight into the trends in the global web developer community. Key findings from the Web Design and Development survey include:
- 83% of respondents prefer using open source instead of traditional proprietary software;
- More developers are using Drupal than the next three highest scoring CMS platforms combined;
- Over the next 12 months, 1 in 4 developers planned to use the open source social publishing and CMS platform Drupal;
- 63% of respondents said they believe an online community is important when considering a web design product;
- 72% of developers are currently using PHP in their web applications, more than four times the number using .Net at 17% and six time more than using Java at 13%;
- At 89%, iOS is the clear leader in operating systems used for creating mobile apps; and,
- Three most common project types are standards based sites, CMS-driven sites and responsive web design.
“This survey is an important early indicator of web site and development trends that we can expect to see over the next 12 months. It highlights the impact mobile application development is having on the market and the increasing adoption of open standards and CMS-driven sites,” said Ronald C. Pruett, Jr., Chief Marketing Officer of Acquia.
“The survey respondents require tools to develop next- generation sites and mobile applications, and this is highlighted by the surge of interest among web developers to utilise Drupal for their web and content management needs.”
