New ATOL certificate scheme comes into force today

Brands using Protravel to supply travel rewards, incentives and prizes for their consumer promotions and employee schemes can be confident that they comply fully with the new ATOL certificate regulations that come into force today, giving them and their prizewinners complete peace of mind.ATOL certificates are now legally required for all holiday bookings and are designed to clarify holidaymakers’ rights if a tour operator collapses, making it clear which elements of a holiday are protected, and making refunds easier.  Changes to the law came into force in April, but it is from today that there is a legal obligation for a certificate to be supplied.

Simon White, Business Development Director at Protravel, said: “When running a travel promotion it is vital that a brand has covered all the bases in terms of consumer protection in order to ensure their prizewinner has a trip that is memorable for all the right reasons.”

The new scheme has been introduced in light of changes in the way people book their holidays, with more and more people building their own package and booking different elements, such as flights and accommodation, separately. Until the changes in the industry in April, there were reported instances of some holidaymakers finding out too late that they were protected for the cost of a flight, but not accommodation.
