Bananas remain top of the tree when it comes to the UK’s favourite fruit, according to the latest shopping insights provided by Shopitize.
In its July insights survey, one of the questions Shopitize asked shoppers using its app was ‘what is your favourite fruit?’
Over 2,600 unique responses show that the banana has once again come out on top. According to these Shopitize app users, 26% say the banana is their favourite fruit, with 23% backing the apple, 19% saying grapes, 11% oranges and 7% pears.
The banana owes its enduring success to being both healthy and affordable, say the experts from Shopitize. Bananas are one of your ‘five a day’ essentials and are seen as a healthy tasty snack that fuels the body with slow release energy.
Bananas are also one of the cheaper fruits on the market with prices halving in the last ten years. According to the Fairtrade Foundation the price of bananas in the UK has dropped from £1.10 a kg in 2002 to just 68p today. Supermarkets are selling ‘everyday value bananas’ for as little as 14p each, whilst organic bananas are being sold for 31p each. As a result, bananas are often a loss-leader with supermarkets with prices reduced to increase shopping footfall.
Shoppers now use the Shopitize app almost daily to save money on their supermarket shopping. Those savings accumulate to £1,000+ over a year thus paying for a nice holiday, Christmas presents or simply a regular treat for users such as a meal-out or a show.
Shopitize’s latest stats show that over 70% of Brits now use their smartphone while shopping, in particular as a tool to save money. Breaking this down further, 51% of us check product prices via our smartphone, 11% of us get additional product information, 3% get product reviews, and 3% share products with friends.
“Our July survey shows that bananas very much remain the UK’s favourite recession-busting fruit, and sustained low prices in the supermarket has reinforced its place at the top of the UK’s shopping list,” says Irina Pafomova, Shopitize’s co-founder.
“The Shopitize app is showing that more and more UK shoppers are shopping on-the-move, regularly visiting supermarkets two or three times a week. Even more tellingly, all sections of society are looking to save money because the cost of living in the UK is currently so high and this is why increasing numbers are using their smartphone to help them extract ‘value’ from supermarket shopping trips.”
Shopitize’s new version of the app was launched last month after over 6 months trialling with shoppers and brands. Using the Shopitize app, shoppers can now gain cash rewards for interacting with brands on their smartphones and buying featured products as part of their regular shopping. The free app is packed full of interesting surveys, fun and simple recipes, curious facts that enrich the shopping experience, as well as a multitude of exclusive cashback offers.
