You may need a Guinness to wash away that lump in your throat after this heartstring-pulling commercial

A new advert by Guinness is raising catching people’s attention, and you don’t have to love the black Irish drink to appreciate its heartwarming nature. Created by BBDO New York, the ad features a group of wheelchair basketball players with an unexpected twist at the end.

The ad begins with a group of muscular men playing an intense game of wheelchair basketball. The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character,’ says the narrator.

For more than 250 years, Guinness has been brewing beer in Dublin. While the brand is known for its classic Irish Extra Stout and being official drink of St. Patrick’s day across the world, the company is also known for its blockbuster-style advertisements.

The Irish brewing company has done well advocating its brand message worldwide and the commercials not only live long in the memory but of course, on line through YouTube. From the hilarious, to the bold and fierce, they all have a bit of cheek. Guinness’s iconic stature is partly due to its advertising.

In 1983 a conscious marketing decision was made to turn Guinness into a ‘cult’ beer in the UK, amidst declining sales. The move was judged successful, halting the sales decline, and Guinness has arguably been marketed as a cult beer in the UK and America ever since.

The UK is the only country to consume more Guinness than Ireland, and the third largest Guinness drinking nation being Nigeria, followed by the USA.
