Mark Price, managing director at Waitrose, said the supermarket had decided to make a very “British response” to the growing competition from the German discounters:
I think that Waitrose has taken a very British approach to that [threat]. We have decided to compete by giving our customers morning coffee and a cup of tea in the afternoon. We decided to compete by giving them…free newspapers. We have decided to compete by selling British products.
“The wonderful thing is it seems to be working. Half a million more customers last year decided to shop at Waitrose.”
