In an interview ahead of IRX 2014, Cody told the magazine that finding frictionless ways to engage with shoppers on the move was a priority for retailers looking to use game-changing new technologies that enable them to identify their customers via their mobile phones. Cody pointed to the Tesco-owned Harris + Hoole app, which enables customers to set up a profile with their picture and their perfect coffee.

When they check into a shop, baristas can greet them by name and ask if they’d like their favourite. “It’s a valid exchange which provides value back to the customer,” said Cody.

Cody went on to discuss ways Tesco is using augmented reality, QR codes and working to engage customers in store. Hinting that he’d be able to give more detail in his IRX presentation, he said: “We are exploring a number of innovative ways in which to help customers in-store which are in pilot phase now.” He added: “IRX gives us a great opportunity to share what we’ve been doing.”

Mark Cody will be interviewed in the Mobile and Mobility Conference at IRX 2014. His interview session, New Innovations In Mobile Marketing, will take place at 11.10am on Thursday March 27.
