A fundraising dinner at Wembley last month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of England’s World Cup victory resulted in a financial loss of £220,000, The Times has learnt.

The gala dinner held on July 30, the golden anniversary of England’s 1966 triumph, was the showpiece of a series of celebratory events organised by promotional company, 66 Winners. Its aim was to raise money for the surviving World Cup winners and several charities, including WellChild and Children In Need.
