Labour’s Tom Watson demands McDonald’s cancel Monopoly promotion

Midlands MP Tom Watson has called on McDonald’s to cancel a new promotion, claiming it will add to Britain’s obesity crisis.

Mr Watson, MP for West Bromwich East and and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, says the new Monopoly competition will encourage people to overeat.

It comes as the Government considers banning fast food adverts on TV before 9pm, to tackle childhood obesity.

Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK

According to The Observer, the MP has asked Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK, to cancel the campaign, which is due to be launched on Wednesday, March 20.

It’s been running at the burger restaurants for the past 14 years.

When customers buy a qualifying McDonald’s product, they find stickers on the packaging that represent tiles in a game of Monopoly.

Diners collect the stickers and have the chance to win prizes, cash or meals at the restaurants during the six-week promotion.

On Twitter, Mr Watson said it was “a grotesque marketing ploy that encourages people to eat more and more junk food by offering sugar-filled desserts as rewards.”

“It is a danger to public health,” he added.
