Big blunder : Serious brand blow.
Following the news that Zavvi accidentally issued an email to all competition entrants that they’d won two Champions League final tickets, Andy Barr, founder and MD of digital marketing agency www.10yetis.co.uk, commented on how this may affect Zavvi going forwards:
“The mistaken strike of one key on a keyboard has delivered a serious brand blow to Zavvi. In the short term it has to face the rage of disgruntled customers that could well, thanks to the growing litigious nature of consumers, include threats of legal action.
In the longer term the brand will have this story floating around the internet, associated with their name, and radically affecting the trust and reputation of this high-profile company.”
Zavvi is owned by British ecommerce unicorn The Hut Group, which bought the rights to the name after the Zavvi music store failed. The company started by selling CDs and DVDs to British shoppers via a VAT-free offshore tax loophole. The company is the developer of HG Ingenuity, a proprietary eCommerce platform.
A Mastercard spokesperson said in an emailed statement: “We are extremely disappointed with today’s events and our sympathies go to the many people who were wrongly contacted by Zavvi in connection to their competition. We have asked Zavvi to clarify how they are resolving as a matter of urgency.”
