How to avoid technological dependency in your kids

We are living in modern times, and this means that practically everything we do is rooted in technology, from how we communicate to how we work and entertain ourselves.

This is not limited to adults as children have found themselves bombarded with technology from birth. With tablets as soon as they can hold them and as such, a whole new generation is finding most of their entertainment from technology alone and this could have an adverse effect on their development and socialization.

If you are a parent who wishes to prevent technological dependency in your children, you need to make an effort from when they are at an early age with deliberate steps such as the ones below;

  1. Encourage traditional toys: children are naturally curious and playful, and while you might want to discourage technological dependency, you should not stop them from playing altogether. A good idea would be to restrict their use of technology for entertainment purposes will a certain age and until then, have them play with traditional toys. Look for outdoor toys for kids from a dealer like TheWorks to encourage them to not only play but also to enjoy the great outdoors.

If you install this in them from an early age, they will be less likely to become dependent on electronic gadgets as they get older.

These toys could also serve as a way for them to learn hand-eye coordination, and so on.

  1. Create tech-free zones and times: While you might want to be wary of technological dependency, you must keep in mind that technology is the future and as such, most places of learning will make use of such devices as time goes on and other children in their peer group will also be familiar with them. To avoid your child being left out, allow the use of technological gadgets but insist on tech-free times and zones.

This means that at certain times of the day, they are not allowed to use electronic gadgets to encourage family time and prevent dependency on these devices. These could be before bedtime or during family dinner. Also, consider banning technology from certain rooms in your houses, such as at the dining table and the family room.

  1. Interact with them and encourage interaction with other children: The early years are the time that children first learn how to interact with their family and peers, and this will not happen if they are constantly staring at phones and tablets.

Spend as much tech-free time with your children as possible and consider hosting tech-free play dates with children their own age to encourage bonding and creating memories that are not tied to technology in any way.

Conclusion

Technological dependency is bound to be a serious issue for children in the new generation if excessive tech use is not addressed in time.

To avoid your child becoming part of the statistic, implement the tips mentioned above to ensure that they have a well-rounded childhood and do not end up technologically dependent.
