Multi-device browsing prompts Netcars.com to launch classified’s first responsive website.
Netcars.com, the fastest growing motoring website in the UK, has launched the first fully responsive website in the car classifieds market. The new site offers improved compatibility and optimisation across mobile, tablet, desktop and other devices.
During the last year, the number of users visiting the site on handheld devices has jumped to 15% of overall site traffic, up 308% on the previous year. The company anticipates that by 2015 some 30% will browse on mobiles and tablets, spearheading the move to the new responsive design.
The new Netcars.com site adjusts itself to fit comfortably on any device and will provide the optimal browsing experience whether users access it from home, work, on the move, on desktop, mobile, tablet, or even Smart TV. With all-round better navigation, browsing and interaction, buyers will have improved access to the selection of the 70,000 vehicles that are for sale on the Netcars.com site.
Louis Rix, Marketing Director of Netcars.com, explained the changes: “Multi-device browsing is a growing trend, and businesses like ours must respond to it. Responsive design is recommended by the likes of Google and recognised as the leading design application of the future. It solves the problem of managing potentially three separate websites: one for desktop, one for tablet, and one for mobile, which is what a lot of businesses are doing at the moment. I don’t believe that’s a sustainable approach, nor is it future proof. Technology doesn’t stand still for long, so who knows what other devices we’ll be browsing on in the near future!”
Netcars.com has also revealed future site changes aimed at its current advertisers. It is in the process of testing improvements around lead generation and tracking, intended to boost the visibility of enquiries generated for dealerships. It is anticipated these changes will be rolled out in time for year-end.
Rix said of the changes: “Our dealers are highly valued and we want to nurture the relationships we have with them and to make sure they’re happy with the service. Dealers told us they wanted more transparency and simplification and we’re responding to that by making some notable improvements.”
He finished by saying: “When it comes to selling cars, particularly in these challenging times, dealers want to know that they are getting the best out of their marketing budget; these changes will assure them of that.”

About responsive design
Responsive web design is a technique to build web pages that serve all devices on the same URL. They do this by changing the way they are presented by assessing which device or browser is accessing it and by responding accordingly. Using responsive web design has multiple advantages, including: keeping desktop and mobile content on a single URL, which is easier for users to interact with, share, and link to and for algorithms to assign the indexing properties to the content.
Search engines can discover content more efficiently.
