Twitter character limit extended … what will this mean for promotions? / PromoVeritas

Twitter handles won’t count: Names that would have previously been included at the start of a reply won’t affect the word limit so you could potentially tweet groups of entrants and tag a brand in Retweets.

You can retweet yourself: Promoters will be able to retweet and quote their tweets themselves so a previously unnoticed promotional tweet could be ‘rebroadcast’ easily and gain more traction.

Twitter looks to extend new Twitter character limit mid  September 2016.  Many Twitter users are hoping for a longer tweet character usage which will not count the submission of images, videos, GIF’s, URL links to your tweets. Also if you insert or reply with a @username then this too will be omitted. This is great news for those that want to get more value out of a tweet and are currently restricted by the 140 character limit. We understand that Twitter has listened to its users who have given feedback on this limit to be extended.

As we wrote back in May 2016, Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey announcing that the social network will be changing the rules surrounding its famous character limit for tweets in a bid to allow users to be more creative.

However the move is not as generous as it seems. They will not be going to unlimited characters. Instead the move will simply mean that Twitter handles, GIF’s, videos, photos, polls and quoted tweets will no longer count as being part of the character count , but the main text will still be limited to the 140-character limit.

Dempsey said “We’re always going to look for opportunities to make tweets a lot more expressive, and enable people to say what they want to say”.

What will this mean for promotions?

URLs won’t count: So you can post that all important link to your promotion’s T&Cs without wasting valuable space or resorting to a further tweet.

Creative elements won’t count: This means that your Twitter competitions can encourage entrants to be even more creative and descriptive.

Twitter’s commitment to simplicity is a ploy to attract confused new users during a period of much publicised stagnant growth which is great news for you. Run properly Twitter promotions can be highly engaging and these changes should encourage a move away from tedious ‘Retweet to enter’ prize draws towards more inventive and content rich promotions.
