Research : Next day delivery – do consumers really want it? – Future Thinking

Next day delivery from retailers has continued to grow in the past 18 months. Sainsbury’s is the latest retailer who are testing the service as they look for a greater share of the online grocery market and this is probably in response to Amazon’s announcement of the launch of same day deliveries in London.

In September 2016, Future Thinking asked consumers two key questions to understand their opinions towards next day delivery:

  1. When shopping online, on what occasions would you opt for ‘next day delivery’?
    1. For the majority of online purchases
    2. If it is offered for free
    3. I would not pay for ‘next day delivery’
    4. Only in an emergency
    5. last minute order when the delivery has to be delivered within a timescale
    6. I would never choose ‘next day delivery’’
    7. I do not shop online
  2. If you had no other option, and needed the product the next day or as soon as possible, how much would you be willing to spend for next day delivery?
    1. I would never spend more on next day delivery
    2. Less than £5
    3. Less than £10
    4. Less than £15
    5. More than £15
    6. If I needed it urgently I would spend whatever it cost
